Kalabaka, Kalambaka, Kalampaka—Greece

Kalabaka, Kalambaka, Kalampaka—Greece. Called by all three names, it is still the same beautiful, serene town. Located 365-kms north of Athens (4-hour train ride). From here you get to the Meteora monasteries. The monasteries are about 4-kms from here. The road is winding, uphill and breathtaking!

The pretty town of Kalabaka at the foot of the imposing rock-pillars of Meteora. with the Pineios river flowing beside it. For outdoor enthusiasts, there is hiking, river-rafting and some challenging rock-climbing.

Kalabaka is surrounded by wineries. You should visit and sample the local wines and tsipouro. An un-aged brandy from Greece and in particular Thessaly is a local favorite.

Meteora Monasteries, Kalabaka—Greece

The most popular local cave (just 40- mtrs high) is located on one of the steepest slopes of a high rock. Just outside the village of Kastraki, this cave is dedicated to St. George. It has a 300-year old tradition and legend behind it. The cave is fondly called, St. George with the scarves.
