Kalabaka, Kalambaka, Kalampaka—Greece. Called by all three names, it is still the same beautiful, serene town. Located 365-kms north of Athens (4-hour train ride). From here you get to the Meteora monasteries. The monasteries are about 4-kms from here. The road is winding, uphill and breathtaking!

The most important and imposing monument in Kalabaka. The byzantine church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from the 10th and 11th century.

Kalabaka is surrounded by wineries. You should visit and sample the local wines and tsipouro. An un-aged brandy from Greece and in particular Thessaly is a local favorite.
Restaurants in Kalabaka are very cozy and serve local Greek food.
The most popular local cave (just 40- mtrs high) is located on one of the steepest slopes of a high rock. Just outside the village of Kastraki, this cave is dedicated to St. George. It has a 300-year old tradition and legend behind it. The cave is fondly called, St. George with the scarves.
In town you will find souvenir shops, and everything else that you would expect in a modern town.
